Government of Dominica distributed thirty more climate-resilient homes to people in a ceremony that took place on Wednesday in the Grand Bay village. The houses are fully funded by the Citizenship by Investment Programme of the country and are part of Dominica's housing revolution.
Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit stated that this is not the end of the housing programme in the constituency and many more homes would be distributed in the Grand Bay village.
Under the "Housing Revolution," the government of Dominica aims to construct climate-resilient homes capable of fighting any category five hurricane. This initiative aligns with Dominica goal to be the world's first climate-resilient nation which was pledged by the Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit after Hurricane Maria in 2017.
Recalling the devastation of Hurricane Maria, Dr Skerrit stated that day after the hurricane he landed in the centre of Grand Bay and the destruction in the village was extreme that none of us in the village believed that it would bounce back to normal.
"For a small country with no natural resources outside forests and freshwater, we were able to work together with the help of people to bounce back to normal," added Dr Skerrit.
Prime Minister Dr Skerrit also stated that the COVID-19 pandemic impacted the entire world, but the government of Dominica had promised each individual that no person shall be sent home.
"Everybody is employed, every public officer is employed, all receive their salaries before the end of the month comes because the government is committed to the people," added Dr Skerrit.
