Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago: Leader of opposition, United National Congress, Kamla Persad Bissessar, lashes out at the Minister of National Security, Fitzgerald Hinds while asking the Government to remove him from his position. UNC leader stated Hinds appointment had emboldened the criminal elements and depressed the law enforcement officers in Trinidad and Tobago.
Kamla pitched into Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley for handing over such a significant Cabinet post to Hinds. She asserted, "Hinds Must Be Removed. It truly is tragic that we have someone like him as the security minister. How can a Prime Minister take someone so incompetent as Hinds and make him National Security Minister? Such an important ministry."
Appointing Hinds as the Minister of National Security clearly sends out a message to the criminals that the country's security and safety is "treated as a joke by the government", Kamla further added.
This rage against Hinds comes as the crime rate of Trinidad and Tobago is soaring at a high rate. Since the year started, 62 murders have already been reported, and the count is expected to rise to 600.
Kamla added, "Imagine his big idea to fight crime, he confessed on Saturday is to ask you the citizens, to do your part. Yet remember when he told constituents, captured on video, to lie to the Police about illegally owning guns? The video is there to see. That is the Minister of National Security. Don't tell the Police the truth about who has illegal guns."
Expressing her concern over the situation, the opposition leader called on the TT population, demanding the prime minister to replace Hinds as he failed to keep the country's citizens safe.
"Those who wish to remain silent about this don't come and complain later on when you or your family or your loved one is a victim of crime due to hinds incompetence," Kamla stated.
Besides this, the Naparima Member of Parliament Rodney Charles also hits out on Hinds, calling his work as 'shameless abdication of ministerial responsibility'.
On Monday, defending himself, Minister Hinds asserted, "No, my duty is not to make sure that people feel safe and secure. My duty is to ensure that those organisations and agencies who are responsible for public safety border security that they are clear about what the people through the Government's policy is, that they are provided with the resources that they need and that I lend encouragement and general support to them, that's my duty."
