Dominica-China friendship hospital has 7 operation theatres: Health Minister

Dominica's health minister Dr. Irvin McIntyre discussed the construction frame-work of the Dominica-China friendship hospital. He stated that the hospital has seven operating theatres and eight intensive care beds. Health Minister stated that the construction of the hospital would be completed in six phases, while phase 1 was officially commissioned in October 2019 and includes emergency building, oxygen, and emergency departments, hospital administrative departments.

Dr. McIntyre stated that the hospital would have two medical technology buildings while building one is complete. It has a radiology department on the ground floor, a medical laboratory on the first floor, a dialysis unit, and ambulatory unity on the top floor.

Phase 2: The second phase includes an ophthalmology unit inclusive of an ophthalmology theatre on the ground floor and staff accommodation on the upper two floors. Also read: Chinese President willing to further boost China-Dominica relations Phase 3: The third phase has an out-patient building opposite the emergency department. The building has been completed. Phase 4 and 5: The fourth and fifth phase includes operations building, blood bank, medical technology building 2, Intensive Care Units, and four operating theatres. Phase 6: It is a three-floor administrative building and 80% complete. Health Minister stated that there are in total eight intensive care beds, which include two fully isolation beds. Besides this, Dr. Irvin McIntyre stated that the patient building would be a four-story structure with both male and female wards. The entire structure is going to have four elevators, three sets of stairs, and a ramp. A local contractor will do the landscaping, said the health minister.

Health Minister also stated that the old ICU and operation theatre building was demolished.

Furthermore, the health minister also stated that the ministry is currently using the Oxford Astrazeneca coronavirus vaccine in its immunization drive. He assured that the vaccine is safe and WHO approved. He also said that the COVAX facility would send SK-Biotech and Pfizer vaccines.
