Trinidad and Tobago: The citizens and residents of Tobago got the chance to witness the prestigious ICC T20 Cricket World Cup trophy during its tour in Trinidad and Tobago.
The arrival of the trophy in Tobago was marked by a huge celebration hosted by the tourism officials. The celebration showcased the vibrant culture of the island through performances by a speech band and traditional masked characters.
During its tour on the island, Chief Secretary Farley Augustine emphasized the significance of hosting the T20 Cricket World Cup in the West Indies and the United States and right here in Tobago.
He said, “We have many promising cricket talents, and this is an opportunity to have them recognize that cricket indeed goes beyond the boundary.”
Augustine further added that cricket goes beyond the perimeters of Tobago, and young people can, in fact, have cricket as a career and be able to master it sufficiently that they can play cricket all over the world.
He stated that there are significant economic gains across the region for hosting Cricket World Cups such as this and added that there are benefits to tourism products as they seek to build sport and tourism.
The Chief Secretary added that while the island is not hosting any matches for the T20 men’s ICC Cricket World Cup, they are happy to be able to host the trophy to get the fans in Tobago the opportunity to be able to take pictures.
“We’re hoping that some of us could get to go and see the matches, and one day we are very much hoping that Tobago people host some of those international matches as well,” he emphasized.
After bringing smiles, joy and spreading cricket fever all around, the trophy travelled to Guyana where it will be marking the end of the trophy tour just before the hosting of the matches in the Caribbean from June 1 onwards.
