CBI funded Bellevue Chopin housing project phase completes, keys to be given over soon

Commonwealth of Dominica also known as nature island of the Caribbean, a beautiful country with peaceful atmosphere suffered nightmare of natural catastrophe, one in August 2015 – Tropical Strom Erika – and another in the autumn of 2017 – category five hurricane Maria – left hundreds of inhabitants homeless as more than 85% of the country was in debris.

Tropical wave Maria, by far was the most destructive and deadliest storm that occurred in Dominica since Hurricane David in 1979. Several other islands were also affected by heavy rainfall during the storm resulting in homes being left uninhabitable and worse, the whole town of Petite Savanne needed to be evacuated on the permanent basis.

Due to this unfortunate event and losses of the public at large, the government of Dominica launched the housing project to provide houses to the people who need them most and lost their homes in the natural calamity.

Under the construction of housing project, Dominica government under the leadership of Dr Roosevelt Skerrit launched the Bellevue Chopin Housing Project in September 2016 to benefit the Petite Savanne residents and resettle them to a safer place and ensured that the houses built for them are resilient houses, which cannot get damaged in heavy rains or hurricane of any category.

The housing project consists of 353 residential units, a commercial plaza where community members can shop and rent out spaces too for extra income in their pockets, community center, a farmer’s market and a football, basketball pitch for members to come together and enjoy the extra-curricular activity.

Last April, Prime Minister Dr. Roosevelt Skerrit handed over 52 housing units to 52 families of Petite Savanne in the residential units of Zone A1 bringing the total unit now occupied to 91.

However, as of July 26, Zone C1 of Bellevue Chopin Housing is structurally and architecturally complete. Roads leading to the edge of the zone is on the works and families are expected to be handed over keys soon. Moreover, the work of C2 and C3 is almost complete, which will also be handed over in August.
