As per reports, the construction of a border fence between the Dominican Republic and Haiti is progressing at a fast pace
The political and social unrest in Haiti is forcing the people to escape to other countries. One of the major routes of these refugees was to seek shelter in the neighbouring Dominican Republic.  It appears that the Dominican Republic no longer desire the entry of these Haitians as the construction of a border fence between the Dominican Republic and Haiti is progressing.  Lieutenant General Carlos Luciano Daz Morfa, Minister of Defense, who has been overseeing the work's development, shared the update on Monday. Following a recent tour of the site, Daz Morfa stated that the scheduled operations are happening as anticipated and that the work is progressing. "The fence will benefit both countries because it will allow more efficiency in the control of migratory flows, the fight against cattle theft and other illicit activities like drug trafficking, the illegal sale of arms, and the protection of agricultural producers, strengthening the current border area protection schemes," Diaz Morfa said. The head of the Ministry of Defense promised that people who will be displaced because of the fence would be given homes in a different location.  The minister spoke with the owners of the properties located in various places where development is underway during the project's monitoring and exchanges with the owners of the residences and lands that will be declared of public utility. He also expressed gratitude for their readiness to help with the fence's building and told them that the government would reward all legitimate owners. Construction on the concrete barrier, which will span nearly half of the 244-mile border between the two countries that share the island of Hispaniola, began earlier this year. The Dominican Republic claims that the wall will limit migratory, drug, weapon, and contraband flow to its shores. In a remark delivered earlier this year during a ground-breaking ceremony in the border town of Dajabón, President Luis Abinader said, "The benefit for both nations will be of enormous importance." While the two countries that makeup Hispaniola are physically close, their distinctions are significant. With a population of 10.8 million people, the Dominican Republic is a thriving tourism destination with year-round tourists to its resorts and golf courses. Haiti, on the other hand, is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, with a population of 11.4 million people and a political and economic catastrophe.
