UK donates 52,000 AstraZeneca vaccines to Dominica, SVG, Grenada and A&B

Caribbean: A donation of 52,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine from the United Kingdom reached four Caribbean counties on Friday, August 7, 2021. Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine was distributed as part of the UK Government’s pledge to donate over 100 million COVID-19 vaccines around the world by June 2022.  Dominica - Antigua and Barbuda received a batch of 12,000 doses of vaccines each, whereas Grenada and St Vincent and the Grenadines received 14,000 doses supply each. While delivering vaccines to Antigua and Barbuda, High Commissioner to Barbados and Eastern Caribbean Countries, Scott Furssedon-Wood said, “We are delighted to be here in Antigua and Barbuda as 52,000 doses of the UK made AstraZeneca vaccines arrived here today as a gift from the people of the United Kingdom to Antigua and Barbuda, but also to St Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada and Dominica.”

He also added that over the next few weeks will be going to be into the arms around the region and “I really hope that they will save lives.”

Governments in the Caribbean are expediting the vaccine drives to inoculate the public. Prime Minister of Dominica also expressed gratitude to the UK for “This generous gift.” PM Skerrit appealed to all unvaccinated adults to get vaccinated as vaccines are available at the District Health Centres islandwide. British High Commissioner, Furssedonn-Wood also expressed delight following the tweet by Prime Minister Skerrit.

Wendy Freeman, Resident British Commissioner in St George’s Grenada also reached out to the airport to received the consignment of vaccines. “Glad and Proud to be helping Grenada,” she said in her tweet.

The UK Government has offered over 5 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine to the COVAX Facility – the worldwide scheme to provide equitable access to the vaccines against coronavirus. This is the first step of delivering vaccines to the world to help to tackle the COVID-19 crisis.
