Authorities in Grenada discovered a boat with seven "decomposed" bodies. It wasrecovered from the coast of Grenada. Officers from the Northern Division were dispatched to Gun Point, Carriacou, on Monday after receiving a report of a drifting vessel.
The severely decomposed bodies of five adults, males and females, and two children were discovered lying at the base of the boat on their backs. They were all of the African descent and were fully clothed. The anchor was tightly fastened to the bow of the about 26 feet long and about eight feet wide boat.
They were confirmed dead by Dr Tyrone Davis at about 6:40 pm. The boat was toured to the Tyrell Bay Port by the local coast guard, where a team of police officers led by Superintendent Esau Pierre waited.
The bodies were covered with a tarpaulin, awaiting the arrival of an investigating team from the mainland who were expected to examine the corpses on Monday morning.
The boat, which is painted blue on the inside and green on the outside, is of unusual design with thick pieces of wood.
Grenada Coast Guard stated the boat was retrieved and taken to Harvey Vale, where "specialised units of the force are presently analysing personal effects and devices found onboard the vessel, following which, a comprehensive update will be provided.
According to reports in the eastern Caribbean island, Guyana, where a group of men have been missing since September, is a possible origin for the vessel.
"Based on the barnacles that are growing on the side of the vessel," an unidentified marine expert is quoted by the Grenada Broadcasting Network (GBN) as saying that the men on board the vessel had been at sea "for an extended period."
Experts say this is a sign that the ship has been drifting for some time now.
Tobago's government announced earlier this year that a ship with at least 15 bodies had been traced to Mauritania.
The seven dead foreigners were found floating in an open wooden boat on Sunday evening in the waters between Union Island and Carriacou.
There are speculations that the boat must have drifted from either Africa or Haiti. Speculations are also rife that it could be a situation where the boat was held up by criminals who robbed the occupants of their engine and left them to drift, which resulted in their deaths due to dehydration and starvation.
