Prisoners to get education from UWI with SKN government's support

The government of St Kitts and Nevis have set an example to assist the inmates in getting an education to create a better future after being released.

The Ministry of Education of St Kitts and Nevis confirmed that it would financially support two inmates in obtaining education who are currently serving their time in Her Majesty’s Prison, Basseterre.

Jonel Powell- Minister of Education Youth, Sport & Culture for St. Kitts and Nevis, made the exciting declaration from his official Facebook page.

The Education Ministry will be providing financial support to Mr. Vincent Fahie and Antawn Thompson. These two inmates of Her Majesty’s Prison would be financially assisted to pursue online Bachelors Degrees with the University of the West Indies (UWI).

Inmate Degree in Sociology with a Minor in Marketing and Thompson will pursue a Degree in Accounting.

Education Minister stated that these two inmates already hold associates degrees that they obtained in prison.

Minister Powell noted that Fahie and Thompson are also educating other fellow inmates in prison.

The Facebook post of Education Minister stated," On Monday, the Ministry of Education confirmed its financial support to Mr Vincent Fahie and Antawn Thompson, inmates of Her Majesty’s Prison, to pursue online Bachelors Degrees with the University of the West Indies (UWI)."

"Fahie will pursue a Degree in Sociology with a Minor in Marketing, and Thompson will pursue a Degree in Accounting.

Both of these men have already obtained Associates Degrees while in prison and have been teaching other students for the past five years. Providing education opportunities in Prison is key to reducing crime. Added Minister Jonel Powell.

This action of the St Kitts and Nevis government will help the inmates in creating a better future and get real-time jobs after being released from prisons. As education is the only way to reduce crime, these efforts of the government are clearly going to be of some use in reducing the criminal activities on the twin-island nation.
