Nevis schools commence preparation for Mini Olympics with Inter-Primary School Championship
St Kitts and Nevis: The schools – both private and public, across the Nevis have commenced the preparation for the largest events on the island’s calendar – the annual Inter-Primary School Championship.

The private, as well as public schools have begun the individual sports meets. As per the latest announcement by Premier Mark Brantley, the government has been planning to host the “Mini Olympics” in the month of April. The event would be organised after the two-year break because of the COVID-19 pandemic’s restrictions on mass gatherings and sports activities.

The Premier of Nevis stated, “The government has been planning for the organisation of the Inter-Primary School Championship in 2022. It is staple of Nevisian life, and it is time to resume it. We are planning to stage the competition in such a way that it is safe and again restores the sense of community and friendly sporting rivalry that we always had here on the island of Nevis.”

“We certainly hope that the Mini-Olympics will be back in swing,” he further stated.

The government of St Kitts and Nevis further explained the schedule of the sports meets.

According to the government, St James’ Primary conducted its sports meet on March 01 (Tuesday), and Joycelyn Liburd Primary will hold the meet on March 3 (Thursday). The sports meet at St Thomas Primary school is scheduled for March 09 and for Elizabeth Pemberton Primary for March 10. On March 11, Ivor Walters Primary will witness the meet, Charlestown Primary will organise on March 16, Nevis Academy will host on March 22, and Maude Crosse Preparatory on March 29.

All schools will hold their sport meets at the Nevis Athletic Stadium, rather than St James Primary school.

While expressing the delight about the participation of the younger population in the athletic competition, the Minister of Youth & Sports in the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) – Eric Evelyn, stated that the government welcomes the opportunity for the students to be back on track and utilise their athletic abilities. Now, the two-year-long wait, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, is over.

“We, as an authority, believe that outdoor activities are extremely important to our students and we want our students to remain fit, as it is not good for their physical health, it’s also good for mental health and overall development as children and young adults,” he was quoted.

“We all are glad that we will be witnessing our students on the athletic tracks again, and I’m sure that this development has been welcomed by all of us – students, parents, teachers and principals, and the fact that the Mondo Track will be utilised fully for the athletic development of our students,” he added.

For the last time, the annual Gulf Insurance Inter-Primary School Championship was organised in the year 2019. At that time, from Zone A, Charlestown Primary won the championship title, and Elizabeth Pemberton Primary won in Zone B.
