Good news for Antigua: UWI to officially open fifth campus in the country on September 1st

The University of West Indies has now decided to open its fifth campus in St. Johns Antigua. The University of the West Indies (UWI), originally University College of the West Indies, is a public university system established to serve the higher education needs of the residents of 17 English-speaking countries and territories in the Caribbean.

On Tuesday, the Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir Hilary Beckles paid a graciousness call to Prime Minister Gaston Browne and later met with senior authorities in the Ministry of Education, just as different partners, including the Antigua and Barbuda media.

Discourses explicitly centered around the path forward for the new grounds dependent on the work mapped out and progressed by means of the Implementation Committee.

"The foundation of our fourth landed grounds, and the fifth grounds of the UWI, involves incredible pride for all of us. It gives an improvement stage to nations of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) and extends The UWI's provincial ability to convey advanced education for the 21st century," Sir Hillary said.

Formal launch activities include a public ecumenical service at the St. John’s Cathedral on September 1, followed by the ceremonial opening of the Five Islands Campus on September 3.

Sir Hillary said that, “Professor Griffith will steer our newest campus during its first year of operations, while formal searches are made to permanently fill this position in addition to those of other substantive senior administrative posts such as Director of Academic Affairs and Director of Finance and Administration,”

He likewise expressed gratitude toward the individuals from the Institutional Oversight Steering Committee, headed by Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the Mona Campus, Professor Dale Webber, and including all Pro Vice-Chancellors and Principals just as the Ministers of Education of the legislatures of Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Barbados and Antigua and Barbuda.
