The prime minister of Dominica is due to speak at an event in Dubai later today (Friday), discussing the resilience and rebuilding of his nation.

Life on the tiny Caribbean island, with a population of approximately 73,000, was shattered when it suffered a direct hit from category five Hurricane Maria on 18 September.

Around 30 people were killed in the storm according to the latest official figures, and thousands left homeless.

It is expected that Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit’s talk will seek to unite the Dominican diaspora around the world in post-hurricane, and advise how they can help move the country forward.

The event, which is taking place at the Middle Eastern city’s Kempinski Palm Jumeirah resort, is likely to encourage the economic citizens of Dominica to provide support.

“We run what is considered one of the strongest and most stable citizenship by investment programmes in the world, and as such, we have a strong community and network of individuals and families that extend further than just our island nation in the Caribbean,” Skerrit said.

“Whether you were born in Dominica or not, we are an opening and welcome people, and we are lucky to have a global network who are engaged in our country and its ongoing prospects. I look forward to speaking with our supporters and citizens in Dubai.

Dominica is not the sum of its soil. It is so much more than that. And our global community is stronger together.

“We are not reduced to the rubble and destruction that Hurricane Maria left in its path. Instead we are united by a common cause; to build back better than before and ensure we continue to be a nation known for its forward thinking, its warm nature, but above all, its resilience.”
