DLP’s historic win decimates Opposition in Dominica

The Dominica Labour Party on Friday stunned the Opposition United Workers Party and the country with a historic landslide victory in General Elections 2019.

The Dominica Labour Party on Friday stunned the Opposition United Workers Party and the country with a historic landslide victory in General Elections 2019. By midnight, DLP secured 17 seats out of 21 in total which adds one additional seat in winning streak as compared to 2014 victory of DLP. On the other hand, the opposition party is on the verge of existential crisis. The grand old party is at risk of scoring less every election, which made them end up securing only four seats. DLP has achieved the rare feat of returning to power at the government with an even more significant majority. As in 2014, DLP had scored 16 seats in the parliament and this year; it stormed the victory by 17 seats. Whereas, Opposition, which stick to its feat against ‘Diaspora’, received most of the votes from Diaspora only. However, Lennox Linton led United Workers Party has been wiped out from the entire country with big margins. The highest margin was scored by candidate of DLP for Grand Bay constituency, Edward Registe who secured 1525 votes against UWP’s Nept Pacquette who winded up with only 209 votes in general elections. Whereas lowest margin was in Castle Bruce constituency where winning candidate Ernie Jno-Finn of UWP managed to get 818 votes and Octavia Alfred missed by only 13 votes as she folded up with 805 votes.

There are several incidents which are involved in the critical defeat of UWP leader by Lennox Linton which involves mass violent protests across the island by its supporters, abusive attack on Bishop of Roseau and major expose of Lennox Linton by Al-Jazeera where his signed MoU was seen to give ambassadorship to Philippine businessman. Moreover, the UWP failed to present the agenda in elections as the party mainly focused on the protest and violent activities instead of development or vision for the Commonwealth of Dominica. Ignorance of youth was another aspect which peddled the opposition party towards collapse.
