Democracy will prevail in the United States: Dominica PM over Capitol riot

Joining hands with other world leaders, Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica, Roosevelt Skerrit on Thursday morning condemned the attack by a pro-Trump mob at the US Capitol.

Dominica: Joining hands with other world leaders, Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica, Roosevelt Skerrit on Thursday morning condemned the attack by a pro-Trump mob at the US Capitol.

In a statement, the Prime Minister said, “We are encouraged that democracy will prevail in the United States in spite of the unfortunate series of insurrection which unfolded in the US capital on Wednesday.”

“Like the rest of the Democratic world, we were astounded by the occurrence, which was an open assault on long-established democratic norms which has a strong tradition in our region. We look forward to a peaceful transfer of power in the United States on January 20, 2021.”

Emphasizing the dominance of power in the Caribbean region, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit said, “As the dominant power in our region, a strong, constant and reliable US democracy is indeed in the interest of all of our nations in the Caribbean.”

It is noteworthy that earlier on Wednesday, a joint sitting of the United States Congress formalized President-elect Joe Biden's election victory, who is said to be sworn in later this month.

Whereas a violent mob, mostly President Donald Trump's followers, stormed the US capital and forced lawmakers into hidings. President Trump witnessed international criticism in a blatant attack to overturn America’s presidential elections harming the nation‘s democracy.

The US Capitol is now again secured, yet four people, including a woman, died in occurring. A woman who is yet to be identified was shot in the chest and died on the spot. Moreover, officers on duty suffered multiple injuries, with one taken to the hospital for immediate treatment. Several lawmakers were spotted hiding under the tables, fearing the violent mob.

Eventually, Donald Trump took it over to Twitter and asked his supporters to remain peaceful. Also, in his message, he thanked everyone. Taking stringent action against Trump, Twitter, and Facebook removed his further posts, terming them violent for people.
