Antigua and Barbuda to host debut ‘Best Pepperpot and Fungee’ Competition
The Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority is all set to host the highly anticipated ‘Best Pepperpot and Fungee’ Competition. The competition will mark its debut during Antigua and Barbuda Restaurant Week which will be held from May 4 to 19, 2024. The ABHTA has collaborated with the Department of Culture, the Antigua and Barbuda Hospitality Training Institute, the Ministry of Tourism and the Antigua Barbuda Hotels and Tourism Association to present this inaugural competition in support of the ‘Eat Like A Local’ program.  The ‘Eat Like A Local’ initiative will celebrate the fascinating cuisine and authentic local dishes prepared by passionate cooks and chefs.  The driving force behind Antigua and Barbuda Restaurant Week, Shermain Jeremy said that the participants will use traditional methods and a unique mixture of spices and herbs.  Jeremy also invited the residents of the country to join the competition and uncover the top dining establishment. He said that all the eateries looking forward to be a part of this unique competition must have the iconic dish – Pepperpot and Fungee on their menu.  Every eatery whether it is a bustling restaurant or a laid back food stall, they will be recognised for their mastery of the iconic dish. In addition to this, Shermain Jeremy gave the details to participate in the competition and said, “To nominate your favorite spot, complete the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority sign-up form or give them a call by 2:00 p.m. on May 7, 2024, providing the name, contact details, and address of your nominated restaurant. To participate, Pepperpot and Fungee MUST appear on the establishment’s weekly menu.” According to the information, the top four establishments will face off in a blind tasting showcase which will be judged by international and nationally recognised chefs and cultural food experts. The judges will focus on flavour profile, taste, texture, technique as well as presentation creativity.  The organisers also invited everyone not to miss on exploring a range of local food spots across Antigua and Barbuda during the 2nd annual Restaurant Week from May 4 to 19. The culinary event will be sponsored by ACB Caribbean, Digicel and Grace Foods.
