After a thorough study of proposals, the Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica, Dr Roosevelt Skerrit announced that a formal agreement has been signed for the construction of the New Marigot Hospital.

The 40,000 sq.fr, two-floor hospital design will have an approximately 75-bed capacity, as well as a wide range of essential services and modern state of the art facilities. Which will include Ambulatory Service Unit, Emergency Care, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Maternity and Paediatric Unit, Laboratory and Radiology Services and Trauma Centre.

The hospital funded under the Citizenship by Investment (CBI) programme, construction of this new hospital will commence in September and is projected to be completed within 12 months to provide complete medical facilities to the residents of Marigot and nearby places.

Similarly, the US $5-million grant from the Government of Mexico will be used to help meet the cost of equipping the facility to ensure that the health needs of the people in Marigot Health District – which includes communities of Marigot – Concord, Kalinago Territory, Wesley, Woodford Hill, Palm Tree, Calibishie, Bense and Anse D’ Mai along with the Douglas-Charles Airport will be attended immediately.

The new Marigot Hospital was the need of time as the vicinity does not have any medical facility centre. However, Dominica Labour Party’s government have also announced earlier that Medical Centres will be constructed in every city of Dominica so that every citizen of the country be able to get timely treatment of their disease.

Notably, during a Town Hall meeting with the Mahaut residents, Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit announced that senior citizens of the country above the age of 60 and children till the age of 18 will get free medical facilities across Dominica. PM Skerrit said, “If a granny goes to the hospital and get a diagnosis through MRI scan, the only thing she will have to give is a smile to the doctor as she will get completely free state of the art medical service in her own country.”

Currently, the medical facility is not up to the mark in the country as only one major hospital is situated in the whole country. Princess Margaret Hospital is located in the capital city of Dominica, Roseau. So far the promise of Marigot hospital will bring laurels to the constituency as inhabitants will not have to travel far to get medical treatment from Princess Margaret hospital, but they will get treatment to their illness at home only.

This is also to be mentioned that Dominica Labour Party soon will be holding a candidate launch at Marigot to launch Gregory Riviere as its candidate for upcoming general elections in Dominica.
