St Kitts Agriculture Ministry shares information post on ‘Mixed Cropping’

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries & Marine Resources of St Kitts shared an information post on its official Facebook account, which focused on 'Mixed Cropping'. The aim of sharing such informational posts related to the Agricultural sector is to enhance the knowledge of Agriculture among the youth of the country.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries & Marine Resources of St Kitts shared an information post on its official Facebook account, which focused on ‘Mixed Cropping’. The aim of sharing such informational posts related to the Agricultural sector is to enhance the knowledge of Agriculture among the youth of the country. 

The Ministry took to Facebook and said, “These tips on identifying what mixed cropping is, good crop combination, its benefits and mixed cropping vs intercropping, are courtesy of Taiwan ICDF.”

The Agriculture Ministry informed that mixed cropping is the process of growing two or more crops on a similar piece of land at the same time, and there are various benefits of mixed cropping, which include:

  • The crop yield increases
  • The pest infestation is minimized 
  • Reduction in risk of crop failure 
  • The soil is utilized properly 
  • Harvesting more than one crop 

Furthermore, while outlining the difference between mixed cropping and intercropping, the Ministry of Agriculture said, “Mixed cropping is a pattern in which two or more crops are cultivated in the same area at the same time while Intercropping is cultivating only two different crops in a certain pattern on the same piece of land.”

The Ministry also highlighted the good crop combination, which included peanuts + maize + cabbage under the cereal/leafy crops and leguminous crops, while broccoli + carrot + cauliflower under the root crops and Brassicaceae crops. 

The Ministry of Agriculture of St Kitts has always been at the forefront of providing various detailed information to the youth of the country through multiple means such as social media, offline seminars, webinars etc. The Ministry has provided information on several topics, including the process of making the sorrel drink, the benefits of sorrel, Grafting & Air Layering, Field Pests: Tree Termites etc.
