Shawn Richards says PAM, CCM will prioritize food security in St Kitts and Nevis
Leader of People's Action Movement (PAM) Shawn Richards stated that his government, with the assistance of its ally, Concerned Citizens Movement (CCM), will prioritize food security in St Kitts and Nevis. He stated that PAM and CCM would implement a robust food security policy designed to enhance the ability to feed ourselves, provide higher income to farmers, and reduce spending on imports, saving foreign reserves. Referring to former minister Lindsay Grant, Richards stated that he has long advocated allocating some of the persons currently on government contract cutting bush alongside the roadways and keeping St Kitts and Nevis looking good. Shawn Richards said that upon being elected to the government of St Kitts and Nevis, they would provide people with land, fencing, and seeds and continue to pay them a salary under the Turn-Key Farming Programme. Following are the features of the programme:
  • Train on the use of the equipment and give adequate support to prepare the land.
  • Provided with a simple-to-use mobile app to help them manage production and yields.
  • The produces will be sold through a central marketing promotion agency
  • Farmers share in the profits
"So not only do they receive a salary, but they also receive a portion of the profits, while the remaining profit goes back into the consolidated fund to reinvest into the program," stated Richards.  Shawn Richards says PAM, CCM will prioritize food security in St Kitts and NevisHe said if somebody is currently cutting grass and other bush within the first 100 days of a PAM/CCM administration, his government could empower people with the land, tools and support to start farming.  "We could empower you to share in the profits of your production. The program's cost will be absorbed by the government. But we see this as an investment in our people, our farmers and the country. We see this Turn-Key Farming Program as a way to empower our people while helping secure our nation's food supply," said Shawn Richards.
