The Minister of Education and Youth, Fayval Williams, urged all students to protect their data and identity proofs when they are online. This notice was made public after the recent news of cyber threats.

During a recent meeting focused on data protection and cybersecurity, Minister of Education and Youth, Fayval Williams, gave this alert regarding data protection. The meeting was held at the Ministry's Heroes Circle offices in Kingston.

While addressing the forum, she said that for all youngsters and other people, cybersecurity and data protection must be at the top of the list of priorities for all youngsters and other people. The use of technologies had raised with an instant effect due to online classes during the pandemic.

Furthermore, Williams mentioned that the Ministry of Education and Youth, in collaboration with e-learning Jamaica, would be strengthening public awareness about matters related to cybersecurity and data protection.

Fayval Williams said, "We want them to know that their data is gold, and they have to take ownership of that data and not just see it as something they give, because some [web]sites ask them to input their name and address and date of birth and all that important information."

While stressing about the hackers, she added that these people are always in search of such data, and it's a bit difficult to catch them. The government will be taking action against such people, but students should also protect their data by themselves.

While concluding, she said that all people should stay up-to-date regarding these types of news and try to be safe from these scams at their levels. This meeting was only to make awareness regarding these issues, and the government will bring new technologies that will safeguard the data from hackers.

The forum sought to build awareness about the importance of cybersecurity and data protection within the Ministry and educational institutions; help educational institutions identify, mitigate, and protect against potential cybersecurity risks.
