Around 2,000 flights cancelled in USA due to spike of COVID-19

An estimated 2,000 flights in the United States were cancelled on Sunday due to an increase in COVID-19 cases across the country. According to FlightAware, as of 8:30 a.m on Sunday, 1,956 flights inside, into, or out of the United States were cancelled. While another 870 flights within, into, or out of the United States were also delayed.

According to The Hill, Southwest had 264 flight cancellations, JetBlue 169 cancellations, and Delta had 161 cancellations. Besides this, American Airlines cancelled 136 flights, while United cancelled 94.

The recent nationwide surge in COVID-19 cases has resulted in a substantial number of aircraft cancellations in the United States.

According to a CNN calculation of FlightAware figures, airlines in the United States have cancelled almost 14,000 flights in the last ten days, including Sunday and Christmas Eve.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) warned on Thursday that additional travel delays are likely in the coming days due to COVID-19 infections among FAA employees, as well as "weather and heavy seasonal traffic," according to The Hill.
