UWP asks Philip J. Pierre led govt to start training programmes for public servants
The St Lucian opposition demanded the government to start more inclusive training opportunities for public services. In a press release on Wednesday United Workers Party stated that during their tenure, a large number of public servants received corporate governance training.  UWP claimed that the St Lucia Labour Party-led government is unable to provide more extensive training programmes to public servants. The opposition stated that in January 2017, their government provided extensive training to all ministers of government, permanent and deputy permanent secretaries, heads of statutory bodies and ambassadors. As per UWP, these members were engaged in the three-day intensive and informative Chartered Director Programme focusing on "The Principles of Good Governance" presented by the Caribbean Governance Training Institute. Furthermore, United Workers Party claimed that upon completion, 70 participants wrote a qualifying examination that earned them the right to use the internationally recognized designation "Chartered Director" (C.Dir.). "At the time, Saint Lucia was among the first countries in the Caribbean to receive such training," said UWP. UWP stated that the St Lucia Labour Party-led government is now following their footsteps but on a much smaller scale.  The UWP said that the one-day-only retreat organized by the SLP government only included Cabinet Ministers and was not expanded to other members of the public service.  "The United Workers Party prides itself on the training and strategic planning which occurred within the public service during our tenure and believes in the ongoing opportunities for the entire public service. We encourage the SLP to improve its programmes and make them more inclusive." the press release further stated.
