St Kitts and Nevis: Heavy rains in St Kitts and Nevis' Phillps' mountain during the past few days brought down tons of debris in the ghaut, blocking pedestrian and vehicular traffic. The blockage resulted in flooding of nearby villages, causing destruction to several homes and commercial spaces around the area.
Reports indicate floodwaters brought derelict vehicles and tree branches to the river bed, preventing the flow of water under the concrete bridge which connects several communities in the Phillips' village. The floodwaters streamed into several residences and yard spaces.
Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis Dr Timothy Harris visited the flooding location and assessed the damages. He also interacted with locals and assured full government support.
PM Harris stated that he is satisfied with the strong community response in Phillips Village. He also talked about climate change and emphasized that it is real, adding that the government will construct resilient communities.
Prime Minister Harris, who is also the Parliamentary Representative for the area, was accompanied by the Director of Public Works, George Gilbert.
Huge pieces of debris and derelict vehicles blocked the culvert in the area, causing the gushing waters to overflow in nearby yards and homes.
