Melissa Poponne Skerrit continues to promote sports among the youth of her constituency and Dominica as a whole. On Friday, with the help of some diaspora, she donated tennis equipment to the sports tourism program and Roseau Central tennis program.
In a Facebook post, Mrs Skerrit stated that she always made her intentions clear to revive lawn tennis in the city and to develop sports tourism as it is sure to foster economic growth.
"My vision has found favour with a few diasporans, namely Avandale Paul and Lloyd Paul who, upon hearing my plans, networked with colleagues and donated tennis equipment to the sports tourism program and Roseau Central tennis program," said Melissa Skerrit- Parliament Representative from Roseau Central constituency.
The handover ceremony was attended by Lloyd Paul, Andrew Carter, Vice President of the Dominica Tennis Association, and Sports Director for Roseau Central Derrick Alexander.
Melissa Skerrit sincerely thanked all presenters, "I would like to sincerely thank our benefactors for their selfless gesture to our sports program, namely Joe Messmer of Columbia Country Club in Maryland, James Armstrong, Dunbar Henri and Larry Bailey,".
Furthermore, she stated that the donation would certainly jumpstart the government's plan to develop tennis not just for sports tourism but also by providing training sessions for school children.
Melissa Skerrit, who is also the wife of Prime Minister of Dominica Dr Roosevelt Skerrit, has always helped develop a sporting culture islandwide. With her efforts to continuously develop the infrastructure required for sports, Dominica hosted OECS/ECCB International Netball Series in February 2022.
