Dominica government to hand over 51 homes in February

Roseau, Dominica: The government of Dominica is all set to hand over 51 climate-resilient homes to people during the month of February. The new homes will be given to residents in Roseau Central Constituency. Melissa Poponne Skerrit: Parliament Representative from Roseau Central constituency, stated that the housing units at Upper River Bank in Roseau are complete and ready for delivery. "Fifty-One families will be getting the keys in February, but in addition to that, what makes this extra special is that it's both commercial and residential," said Melissa Skerrit during her visit to the constituency last week. The Units include nine commercial spaces for which businesses have already been selected. She stated that housing had been an issue of concern for the Roseau Central constituency, which is why the government fast-tracked the projects. Furthermore, Mrs Skerrit stated that around 1,000 applications were received by the government for these units; however, the authorities shortlisted the most deserving candidates for the initial handover. Not only that, she said the sidewalks around Roseau would be widened to provide additional parking space around the city. She said the sidewalks would be created in a manner that all persons with wheelchairs can also utilize. Besides this, it will include smart lighting underground utility cable to clear the skyline. Melissa Skerrit also assured that the drainage related issues being faced by residents in Virgin Lane and River Street would be resolved soon. She said the issue was brought in by residents, and she has taken note of the situation. She said the drainages would be covered, providing improved esthetics. The government of Dominica is building what they call a "Dynamic Dominica". Under this theme, major upgrades are being done islandwide in terms of infrastructure, health, education and other facilities. Climate resilience continues to remain the topmost priority for the government, and all new construction works are taking note of this. The country is working towards becoming the first climate-resilient nation.
