Is violence the only way to success for UWP in Dominica?
Wednesday, 4th December 2019
A few weeks ago, Capital city Roseau of Dominica was burning under the violence of protestors demanding electoral reforms. The objectors belonging to the opposition United Workers Party destroyed public and private property in the city. Concerning the public safety, the riot control police had to use tear gases.
After two weeks of this incident, Marigot, the parliamentary constituency of Opposition leader Lennox Linton is now under the negative atmosphere of UWP where the inhabitants are burning public properties to protest upon the alleged warrant issued against the leader.
But, is violence the only way to spread your message? No, it is not. Violence leaves a permanent effect on the country by destroying its infrastructure and sometimes the economy too.
Correspondent of WIC News interacted with some locals of the island and asked their viewpoint on destruction being spread on the island for political interests.
A lady named Alieta who runs a souvenir shop near the Roseau Bayfront told that she is the only bread-earner of the family of four and her only way of making more money depends on cruise ships and tourists coming to Dominica. But, this violence is spreading a defeatist message around the world, even the US has issued a travel warning for its nationals intriguing to visit Dominica. As per Alieta, this political collision caused by the opposition is harming the ambience and the business of many like her around the island.
Prominently for a nation like Dominica, tourism is the backbone of the economy. Also, Dominica was wrecked by Hurricane Maria, Tropical Storm Erika and many such natural tragedies so far, So at this stage, the country ultimately necessitates more travellers to visit and spend their money on the island.
But, wistfully, different political perspectives of nationals are destructing the country with regular violence attacks.
Notwithstanding, the general elections are on coming Friday, and United Workers Party and it's leader Lennox Linton are only opting the violent options to spread their message of election campaigning.
Lennox Linton has failed to put on his agenda for the general elections and has been continuously targetting the Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit for his actions.
The usage of violence, riots, protests are remaining the priority of the party and are harming the tourism on the island as people are afraid of making their visit to the country due to ongoing violent protests.
The Seaborne airlines also cancelled their overnight stay in the country because of the U.S travel warning issued for Dominica.
But this is not new to UWP, back on February 7, 2017, UWP constituents objected in Roseau demanding the dismissal of Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit. The protestors went vicious and induced annihilation to the public and private property. Opposers of the DLP ruling government harmed several buildings and shops. Moreover, some shops were also looted by damaging the entry path of the shops.
