Dr Carla Barnett new CARICOM Secretary General
All CARICOM leaders unanimously agreed to the election of Dr Carla Barnett as the new secretary-general of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

Carla Barnett has become the first woman and first Belizian to hold a significant position in the CARICOM.

Belize's United Democratic Party have congratulated Dr Carla Barnett as the new Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). Doctor Barnett was elected during the virtual 21st Special Meeting of the CARICOM leaders, presided over by Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Dr Keith Rowley, the current chairman of the 15 member grouping of countries. She replaces Dominican-born diplomat Irwin LaRocque, who has held the post of CARICOM Secretary-General since August of 2011.

Dr Carla Barnett, who served as the first female Deputy Secretary-General of CARICOM from 1997 to 2002, has now taken her distinction to the highest level as the first woman to become CARICOM Secretary-General.

The United Democratic Party showed their tremendous acknowledgement and recognition internationally of Belizean talent and competence, which the distinguished appointment represents. UDP stated that they are particularly proud of our party's close association with Dr Barnett, who served as a Senator and Minister of Government during the last two terms of the UDP administration led by Prime Minister Right Honorable Dean Barrow.

UDP leader Patrick Faber, the party's executive and the entire UDP family congratulated Dr Carla Barnett on her appointment and wished her success in her new role and responsibility, which they said is something she will execute and fulfil with distinction, making the nation prouder and our regional community stronger.
