Thompson-Herah wins gold for Jamaica in Olympics

Jamaica: Elaine Thompson -Herah of the Caribbean island - Jamaica was honoured as 100 m winner in Tokyo Olympics on Saturday, July 31, 2021.

Elaine, with the second-fastest time in the history of 10. 61 seconds, reached the finished line and winning a gold medal for Jamaica in the Olympics. While two-times champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce bagged a silver medal with 10.74 seconds, and Shericka Jackson has won a Bronze medal in 10.76 seconds.

Thompson-Herah's this year's Olympic record winning mark matched the second-fastest timing in the history of 10.61 seconds, which the late American Florence Griffith-Joyner set.

Thompson-Herah was earlier forced to withdraw from a - Gateshead Diamond League event in the month of May because of her Achilles problem that has been affected her for numerous years, yet the Jamaican athlete fought back and managed to win gold for the island country.

The Prime Minister of Jamaica - Andrew Holness, congratulated Thompson via his social media handle, which stated, "Elaine Thompson- Herah has cemented her name in the record books and the breaking of Florence Griffith Joyner's 100 Meter Olympic Record-10.61."

The citizens of the island country have also shown their immense joy and congratulated Thompson-Herah and appreciated Jamaican athlete's dedication and hard work to win the gold medal in Tokyo Olympics.

The Jamaican sprinter completed a rare sprint double, winning gold medals in both events at the - 2016 Rio Olympics, where she bagged a silver medal in the 4×100 m relay.

Thompson-Herah won a silver medal in the 200 m at the - 2015 World Championships and a gold medal in the 4x100 m relay; she competed in the 100 m at the 2017 & 2019 World Championships achieving fifth and fourth, respectively.

Currently, Thompson-Herah also ranks as the sixth-fastest woman of all time in the 200 m.
