Operational in January, official pledges

Newly installed traffic lights in Basseterre were tested today, with the director of the Public Works Department saying he expects them to be operational in the coming days.
The tests were conducted by officials from , St. Kitts Electricity Company Ltd, Synergy Engineering Ltd – a Jamaican-based company that installed the traffic signal system – and the Public Works Department.
The process was supervised by the traffic department of the Royal St Christopher and Nevis Police Force, which controlled the flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic at the junctions during the assessment period.
Barrington Cross, a traffic signal analyst with Synergy Engineering, explained that today’s exercise included checks on the three systems located on the Basseterre Bay Road, Fort and Central Streets, and Wellington and Pond Roads.
“We are making sure that everything is working,” he said.
PWD director Cromwell Williams said there was one more hurdle to pass before the signal lights are switched on.
“There needs to be an amendment to the traffic regulations,” he said.
“That currently is being finalised by the legal department and that only requires the signature of the minister with responsibility for transport.”
Earlier today the PWD chief said that “people are going to have to make adjustments in terms of their behaviour and habits” when using the roads – both drivers and pedestrians.
“This is a step forward in our development in terms of our infrastructure and I am sure that in short time the general public will see the benefit of these traffic lights.”Latest
