St Kitts and Nevis: Illegal firearms haul up to 40

Police say they are ‘happy’ with the public’s help

Another illegal weapon has been seized from the streets of St Kitts and Nevis.

This brings the total number of firearms taken by police in 2017 up to 40.

Earlier this week, a citizen safety patrol by members of the St Kitts and Nevis Defence Force conducted a stop and search on random vehicles in the South East Peninsula area.

This led to the discovery of MagTech air rifle and a large amount of pellets.

One person has been taken into custody following the incident.

In the days before police on Nevis removed a rifle and ammunition from the Gingerland community.

Superintendent Trevor Mills, divisional officer for Nevis, said: “The island has seen a number of young persons, mainly males, being killed by the use of firearms, which instil a high level of uneasiness among many residents.”

He thanked members of the community who work with the police to get guns off the streets.
