St Kitts and Nevis PM leads delegation to Taiwan

Prime Minister Timothy Harris is currently on an official visit to Taiwan, where he is expected to hold several high level meetings aimed at strengthening bilateral relations with St Kitts and Nevis.

The week-long trip came as a courtesy of the government of Taiwan.

During his stay, Harris is expected to make an official call on Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen.

Cabinet Secretary Josephine Huggins, ambassador and special adviser to the Prime Minister Michael Powell and Superintendent of Police McCarta Browne are among those accompanying the prime minister.

Resident Taiwanese ambassador to St Kitts and Nevis, George Gow Wei Chiou, is assisting with the trip.

In 1983, Taiwan became the first country to establish diplomatic relations with the Federation of St Kitts and Nevis.

A spokesman for the prime minister’s office said that it was “a relationship that has proven mutually beneficial.”

More recently, the government of Taiwan has assisted St Kitts and Nevis in its crime fighting efforts, particularly in terms of enhancing the federation’s CCTV project.

The two nations have also entered into a formal arrangement that will see police cooperation.

This agreement provides for a law enforcement personnel exchange, to include a technical component and study opportunities in Taiwan.
