‘Smoke in cabin’ causes St Lucia-bound plane to land in Bermuda

A JetBlue plane en route from New York to St Lucia had to make an emergency landing in Bermuda on Friday.

Flight 881, which took off from John F Kennedy International Airport, made the stop after it was suspected that smoke was in the cabin.

A spokesman for the airport in Bermuda said: “The aircraft landed at 12.15pm as a result of the pilot reporting a detector light going off, indicating smoke in the cabin. The plane was an AirBus A321 from New York heading to St Lucia with 202 passengers on board.”

Once on the ground, the aircraft was searched by the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service (BFRS), who failed to find evidence of smoke or fire.

“BFRS personnel dressed in breathing apparatus carried out a thorough search of the Airbus compartment with thermal imaging equipment before turning the scene over to the airline representatives,” a spokesman for the service said.

The plane took off just after 2pm and landed safely later in St Lucia.
