The opposition St Kitts-Nevis Labour Party elected its first woman deputy national leader.

Marcella Liburd, who is also member of parliament for St Christopher 2 (Central Basseterre), was chosen for the position without any object at the party’s annual conference on Saturday night.

The two-term parliamentarian previously served as chairperson.

Liburd, a lawyer by profession, has also served in the St Kitts and Nevis National Assembly as senator, deputy speaker and speaker.

She held the portfolio of health, community and social development and gender affairs in the last Labour cabinet, when leader Denzil Douglas was prime minister.

The new deputy national leader replaces former deputy prime minister Earl Asim Martin, who did not seek re-election.

The party’s conference was being held at the St Kitts Marriott Resort.
