Saint Lucia records 3 deaths as COVID-19 cases surge

Saint Lucia is experiencing a sudden surge in cases related to the COVID-19 virus. As per the Ministry of Health, three confirmed deaths due to the virus were recorded between January 15 to 25, 2024.

Following the recent cases of COVID-19, the island has also recorded an increase in hospitalizations due. According to the information, the Ministry noted an increase in the number of individuals suffering from flu-like illnesses at the Wellness Centers, Emergency Departments and private doctors' offices.

Furthermore, it added that it is because of the new COVID-19 variants, Influenza A and B, as well as Respiratory Syncytial Virus. The Ministry also mentioned that the older citizens, unvaccinated and people with serious health conditions are being affected the most.

As per the Health Ministry, the COVID-19 Janssen vaccine is also available and can be taken as a booster dose to prevent the effects of this virus.

In addition to this, it was also announced by the Ministry that it is preparing for the event if cases continue to rise in Saint Lucia.

While assuring the citizens that care is being taken, the Ministry said that the hospitals are on alert to make sure that supplies, equipment and medication are available.

Also, the citizens will get access to PCR and rapid testing free of charge at the various Wellness Centers islandwide, highlighted the Health Ministry. To reduce the impact of respiratory illnesses, the Ministry urged the public to follow some measures, which include maintaining a healthy lifestyle through diet, adequate sleep and regular exercise.

People must also ensure compliance by taking prescribed medicines if they suffer from any health diseases. Individuals are also asked to strengthen sanitary measures at work and home and must wear a face mask.

While asking the citizens to safeguard themselves and their loved ones, the Ministry outlined, "We are presently in the flu season, which runs from October to March, which is why we would like to encourage the use of the flu vaccine, which is available free of charge at the various wellness centres."
