The government of Saint Lucia is taking effective measures to end employee exploitation and make the job market in the country more equitable for working-class citizens. Prime Minister Philip J Pierre has voiced his plans that this will be done only by instituting a good minimum wage.
According to the information, the new minimum wage will increase the salaries of around 13000 Saint Lucians with the government saying that no worker will earn less than $1126 in a month, $52 per day and $6.50 per hour.
The proposed minimum wage will allow families to fulfil their basic needs in a better manner than earlier with several individuals using it for the things they were not able to spend money earlier.
PM Pierre and his administration are determined to improve the standard of living of the working class of the country, and this strategic move is aimed at the same.
It is to be noted that a new Minimum and Equal Wages Commission (The Commission) was established under PM Pierre in 2022 after the commission, local employers, and labor unions held extensive consultations to determine a proposed and fair minimum wage rate.
The new proposed minimum wage is the first in a series of strategic policy actions to uplift more citizens of the country out of poverty, boost the workforce, and ensure that the citizens can get a dignified standard of living.
Meanwhile, before the Minimum and Living Wage Bill comes into effect on August 1, 2024, the Government is also calling out citizens to give their input on the development.
The Government said that the public is encouraged to provide feedback to the Commission in writing no later than June 6, 2024, at the following address: The Chairperson, Minimum and Equal Wages Commission, Department of Labour, Barnard Hill, Castries.
Citizens can also share their reviews by sending them to the Commission through email at minimumwage@govt.lc or minimum.wages758@gmail.com.
