Residents safe after landslide in Loubiere, Dominica

Residents in Loubiere, Dominica, are safe after a landslide hit the area on Monday evening.

Initial reports told of people fleeing from the area at around 8pm when earth started moving.

One resident she said expected a landslide following Hurricane Maria, telling Dominica News Online that one section of land had been “hanging there” since the storm’s September passage.

A nearby section is also expected to fall, she added.

So far there has been no comment from officials. WIC News has reached out to the Commonwealth of Dominica Police Force for further information.

Yesterday morning sources said that police officers from Grand Bay and Point Michel had gone to the scene.

The area is still without electricity since Hurricane Maria struck, meaning investigations overnight were difficult.

One local media outlet reported that a fire truck had attempted to access the scene but was unable to due to “derelict vehicles”.
