Born in Tabernacle, the Prime Minister has been loyal to his people and worked hard to raise the quality of life of residents in his constituency. Four years since his election, the PM has brought impressive development and progress to Constituency #7.
The last four years have been busy for St Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister the Hon. Dr Timothy Harris. From reconstructing infrastructure after Erica and Maria to investing in the economy, Prime Minister Harris has worked for the benefit of Kittitians and Nevisians everywhere. Throughout this time, he has not forgotten the people who helped him accomplish such achievements, and has remained dedicated to improving the lives of his constituents. This article lays out the highlights of his work in his constituency.
One area the Prime Minister has completely transformed in Constituency 7 is healthcare. Upon election in 2015, one of his first actions was to refurbish Mary Charles Hospital in Molineux. The refurbishment included new and repaired equipment, improved plumbing, repairs to the infrastructure, and the installation of 110 volts of electricity. Harris’ Government gave approximately $525,000 to this project which dramatically improved the health of residents in Molineux and the surrounding areas. Upon completion in 2016, constituents celebrated. Ronald Isaac and Joseph Thomas from Phillips’ Village, among others, declared how happy they were and praised PM Harris. “For years […] nobody did any work on the hospital. And now after a couple of months, […] he (PM Harris) has done something. I think that is real good.”
Since then, Harris has continued to advance the health of his constituents. In 2017, he established the construction of a new state-of-the-art Health Centre in Tabernacle, investing $2.4 million into the project. Every year since, he has personally led ‘Health Walks’ throughout villages in Constituency 7, encouraging residents and voters to join him. He has also visited hospitals and health centres, thanking the workers and connecting with the people there. His efforts have been applauded. Said Susanna Lee, resident of Stone Castle, told the Office of the Prime Minister that she was “extremely proud” of the health facility, and “glad” to have Dr. Harris as Prime Minister.
Other areas into which PM Harris has invested money and time include business and infrastructure. The Black Rocks Enhancement Project, commenced in 2016, is a prime example. In Phase I, which completed in 2017, the Government invested over $250,000. This saw the construction of 10 new vendor booths, improvements to infrastructure, landscaping, parking, and drainage, and the paving of the dirt road. Phase II is now Dr. Harris’ focus, which is bringing multiple new tourist attractions to the area and enhancing the entrance in order to boost Black Rocks’ tourism appeal and support its thriving economy. More recently, the construction of a parking lot and road at Bourryea Commercial Park will benefit many local businesses, such as Fraites Bakery, Stone Deal and Pennyfeather. Molineux residents too, will gain from new employment opportunities and increased investment coming into the area. Similarly, in Tabernacle, the country’s first ever Forensics Lab recently opened – a huge acclaim for Constituency 7.
As well as large, transformative projects, the PM has also invested his personal time in meeting and listening to his constituents. Every year, he has held town hall and general meetings, forums, and one-on-one consultations in different villages throughout the Constituency. He regularly attends Tabernacle’s Church, has visited the schools and Fire Station, has sang with the local choir, and spoke at Tabernacle’s Day Care Centre Graduation in 2018. In 2015, he even spent his birthday with his constituents.
Nick Amory, resident in Constituency 7 and supporter of PM Harris, is an example of how much constituents appreciate Dr. Harris’ work. “In the last four years, the Prime Minister has done a lot for Constituency 7. These include things that even the media doesn’t know. He deserves another term to take what he’s given us to the next level.”
His commitment to learning about the individual people that make up Constituency 7 is what has truly won Dr. Harris the heart of his people. By investing in residents’ quality of life and connecting with people on a day-to-day basis, PM Harris has proven his loyalty to Constituency 7.
