NYPD gift bulletproof vests to Grenada police

Forty officers raised funds in NYC

Monday, 7th August 2017

The Royal Grenada Police Force are to receive around 100 bulletproof vests after Grenadian-born officers of the New York City Police Department raised funds.

A group of 40 officers collected money to purchase important items for their Grenada counterparts.

The main fundraiser was a bingo event which raised about $7,000. Lieutenant Nimrod Ollivierre and PO Moses Charles made personal contributions towards purchasing of the vests.

There were also donations from other members of NYPD with Grenadian heritage, as well as other non-Grenadian officers in the NYPD including Detective First Grade Aubrey Henry, who facilitated the payment of broker fees, customs, port charges and shipment to Grenada.

On Wednesday, three of the officers – Lt Ollivierre, PO Dave Fleary and PO Auda Nelson - joined community organiser, Heron ‘Rocking J’ Douglas in arranging and packing the vests for shipment to Grenada.

The NYPD Grenadian Officers Organisation was formed to assist police in Grenada with much-needed items, including vests, radios and other police equipment.

The organisation also helps share policing knowledge and expertise in other specialised areas of policing.

Last year the group of officers also made a financial donation to the widow of Corporal Daniel Edgar of the Royal Grenada Police Force, who was shot and killed in the line of duty.
