Police Officials in Trinidad and Tobago have marked the J’ouvert celebrations a massive success, citing the fact there is no report of the major incidents and issuance of the law-and-order certificates during the event.

According to the reports, J’ouvert’s series of events were remarkably successful, and celebrations took place across major parts of Trinidad and Tobago. It is to be noted that police reported little or no incidents during the celebrations. TTPS Gold Commander- ACP Kelvern Thompson expressed his delight and extended a vote of thanks to the Masquerades for their cooperation throughout the festivities. “Diligent and intelligent led patrols along with CCTV-led surveillance have identified known persons of interests, and officers were able to deter them from committing further arrestable offences. We can say that this has been a result of our collaboration, which would include our masquerades, who have been very cooperative”, added ACP Thompson.

He also said that there was a strong police presence in the ten division, consistent with estimates from various commanders.

“While there were minor incidents and minor crimes committed against the person, there was a strong presence of regular, municipal and transit police officers”, remarked TTPS ACP. Keeping this in mind, the police department said that they ensured people's safety during the festivities by installing CCTV cameras on every street. They also placed their officers on patrolling so that people could not get into any kind of trouble or argument.

According to the preliminary information, the celebrations took place in various parts of Trinidad and Tobago, including Arima, Mayaro, Tunapuna, Port-of-Spain, Sangre Grande, San Fernando and Tobago, among other areas, and culminated smoothly.

As divisional exercises continued for general security, frontline and specialized officers were maintaining high visibility and concentration within the epicentre of the activities.

It is to be added in the statement of TTPS ACP that they have recovered some weapons outside the areas of celebration and arrested some persons related to them.

Moreover, the Trinidad and Tobago police services reminded the public not to use glass bottles during the Carnival as they could be dangerous, cause harm to people, and risk their safety. Due to this, the police department proposed the regulation in the cabinet, and it was approved and sanctioned.

Many people across the country took to their social media handles (Facebook) to laud the tireless efforts of the police officers during the Carnival.

While reacting to the news, a person named Joel A Jones commented, “I’ve never seen this much police presence before! Everywhere you turn is a uniformed or ‘plain clothes’ officer! The effort was deliberate and tangible. Great job thus far, Trinidad and Tobago Police Service.”

Another FB user, by the name of Sandra Watson wrote, “Thank you Commissioner of Police, the Police service, Soldiers and Coast Guard team, for keeping T&T’s citizens safe for the Carnival season.”

Additionally, the enforcement and safety exercises were coordinated by ACP Kelvern Thompson along with the assistance and support of Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force and Trinidad and Tobago Municipal Police Service, among other security agencies.
