Jamaica & Costa Rica celebrated 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations

Jamaica and the Republic of Costa Rica celebrated the 50th anniversary commemoration of diplomatic relations virtually on Wednesday, July 21.

Jamaica: Jamaica and the Republic of Costa Rica celebrated the 50th anniversary commemoration of diplomatic relations virtually on Wednesday, July 21. During the virtual ceremony Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator the Hon. Kamina Johnson Smith said, "Government of Jamaica and the Republic of Costa Rica will remain dedicated to working collectively for the advancement of both countries." “Jamaica and Costa Rica are joined for the challenges faced by middle-income developing countries,” she added. Minister Johnson Smith further noted that both nations continue to advocate in the international community for immediate action to be taken to ensure sustainable recovery from the coronavirus pandemic. In addition, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Worship of the Republic of Costa Rica, Rodolfo Solano Quirós, said: “Despite the difficulties of the pandemic, our countries work collectively on a strong bilateral and multilateral agenda”. He said the Republic of Costa Rica partnered with Jamaica to help promote access to vaccines, support Jamaican students with scholarships, and identify priority areas of sustainable tourism. Meantime, Senator Johnson Smith remarked that Jamaica’s strong presence in the Republic of Costa Rica has enriched cultural expressions and improved the prospects for diasporic engagement. “We believe that your unique capacity for human, social, financial, and intellectual capital, along with the unabashed pride of your dual homelands, will continue to benefit both Jamaica and Costa Rica,” she said. As per the Minister, there are more than 64,000 persons of Jamaican descent in Costa Rica, with the majority living in Puerto Limón, which is considered the largest Jamaican community in Central America. About Costa Rica : Costa Rica is a rugged, rain forested Central American country with coastlines on the Caribbean and Pacific. Though its capital, San Jose, is home to cultural organisations like the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum, Costa Rica is recognised for its beaches, volcanoes, and biodiversity. Roughly a quarter of its territory is made up of protected jungle, swarming with wildlife, including spider monkeys and quetzal birds.  Jamaica :  Jamaica, a Caribbean island country, has a lush topography of mountains, rainforests and reef-lined beaches. Several of its all-inclusive resorts are clustered in Montego Bay, with its British-colonial architecture, and Negril, known for its diving and snorkeling sites.
