Heavy rainfall in Trinidad causes flood like situation

Trinidad and Tobago: The Meteorological Office in Trinidad and Tobago reported that heavy rainfall on Tuesday morning caused flooding across several parts of Northern Trinidad. These floods also affected the capital city, Port of Spain, Pasea, and Tunapuna.

The Office reported that all eastbound lanes of the Churchill Roosevelt Highway between Pasea and Macoya were flooding, causing major traffic delays.

According to the councilor for Curepe and Pasea, J-Lynn Roopnarine, within the TRPC, a drain that ran under the highway before Macoya also got blocked because of the heavy rains. Also, the drains parallel to the highway were blocked.

It was reported that the drains along the highway were cleared by the RPRC while the Works and Transport Ministry are still working to clear the drain running under the highway which was not completed before Tuesday’s rainfall.

Not only this, but these rains also flooded the new headquarters of the Ministry of Health located at Queen’s Park East Port of Spain.

In an official release, the ministry advised the general public about the closure of its head office yesterday because of what was described as an unexpected plumbing issue that were caused by many floors being affected by heavy rains.

Meanwhile the video footages of the flooding situation along Queen’s Park West and several other areas circulated on social media, with residents blaming the government for not having adequate facilities for the rainwater to be washed away.

“POS Corporation should try cleaning the drains around POS; after all, it is their job,” wrote a user named John Bruce Milne, while another user wrote, “Probably some incompetent political supporter got a contract of the new building of Ministry of Health.”

It is to be noted that on Tuesday, the weather will remain variably cloudy with hazy conditions forecasted to be interrupted by an isolated to scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms which will favour southern half of Trinidad during afternoon. On the other hand, Tobago will remain generally hazy with variably cloudy conditions.
