Fugitive and international criminal Mehul Choksi granted bail on medical grounds to travel to Antigua and Barbuda by Dominica High Court on Monday.

Dominica: Fugitive and international criminal Mehul Choksi granted bail on medical grounds to travel to Antigua and Barbuda by Dominica High Court on Monday.

Notably, Choksi has to deposit 10000 EC (Eastern Caribbean dollar) as bail. Dominica court, in its remarks, said, "Strictly For Medical Treatment in Antigua.”

The Interim bail is granted till he is certified fit to travel; after that, he has to return to Dominica. According to Choksi's lawyers, his medical condition has been serious for quite some time. They appealed to the Dominican Court to move Choksi either back to Antigua or to the United States, where he could be treated.

As per the official Copy of the Medical report submitted by Mehul Choksi, he would be receiving treatment for neurological issues in Antigua.

Importantly, he will only back to Domnica till he is certified fit.

The hearing in Choksi's extradition case has been adjourned and is expected to resume after the embattled businessman returns from Antigua following his treatment, the reports said.

Additionally, proceedings for Illegal entry adjourned till he is fit to travel.

The 62-year-old diamantaire is wanted in India in connection with the ₹ 13,500-crore Punjab National Bank fraud case.

Mehul Choksi had gone missing from Antigua and Barbuda, where he lived since 2018 following his escape from India.

Choksi and his nephew Nirav Modi had fled India in the 1st week of January 2018, weeks before a multi-crore scam in the Punjab National Bank (PNB) rocked the Indian banking industry. The duo allegedly bribed officials of the state-run bank to get Letters of Undertaking (LoU) based on which they availed loans from overseas banks that remained unpaid.
