Caribbean athletes jump higher at Pan Am Games 2019

St Lucia’s Levern Spencer topped a podium of Caribbean athletes in the women’s high jump at the Pan American Games in Lima, Peru on Thursday. Spencer jumped 1.87 meters to get the better of Antigua and Barbuda’s Priscilla Frederick, who cleared the same height but lost out on countback.

The bronze medal also went to an athlete from the Caribbean as, Jamaica’s Kimberley Williamson leaped to 1.84 meters for third, beating the season’s best of another St Lucia athlete Jeanelle Anna Scheper. Scheper also leaped 1.84 and was better than Brazil’s Valdileia Martins on countback.

Ironically, Frederick only missed out on the gold medal after she counted more misses than St. Lucia’s Levern Spencer who registered a similar leap of 1.87 meters but was giver the nod based only on her consistency. Jamaica’s Kimberly Williamson claimed bronze.

Before the start of her event, Frederick said she aimed to bring home the gold this year, having been beaten by Spencer in 2015.

On Wednesday, Greene clocked 10.23 seconds to finish third in the 100 meters finals at the Athletics Stadium in Lima, while just one week earlier Ryan had captured bronze in the men’s light welterweight boxing.

Greene was beaten to the line by Paula Oli De Camilo Andre who finished second in 10.16 seconds and USA’s Michael Rodgers who won the gold in a time of 10.09 seconds.
