A resident of Belize City, Ellis Meighan, has been detained in San Diego, United States. The male is being sought for questioning in connection with the murder of 33-year-old Roy Burgees.
The suspect was caught while he was trying to illegally enter the United States and was detained at a detention center in San Diego, California.
According to the information, the incident took place in April 2024 when Burgees was fatally shot while inside his vehicle on mile twenty-two along Placencia Road. At the time, he was accompanied by Maia James, who also got injured during the attack.
The reports added that the pair was approached by a male suspect who opened fire, which resulted in the death of Burgees and James being shot in the face. At present, Meighan is wanted for her attempted murder as well.
In addition to Meighan, Police officials are also actively seeking 29-year-old Joseph Vaccaro in relation to the same incident. The investigation is going on as authorities work to bring those responsible to justice.
The police also reported that they were not aware of any prior domestic complaints but they have found that Burgees and his fellow target were having an affair.
The authorities reported that American police officials have been notified about his status and are said to be presently coordinating his deportation back to Belize.
The quick actions of the US police are being lauded by the Belizean authorities as well as the general public who are also noting that criminals can hide but can’t run for long.
“When you live in peace, there is no need to be running. It doesn’t matter how far or fast you run, you can’t run from yourself,” wrote a user named Linarez while another user suggested, “he should have been left there. he will brought back to Belize and get cleared of the matter, then continue his criminal life here, affecting the community again.”
