Barbados: Prime Minister of Barbados Mia Amor Mottley had a phone conversation on July 13, 2021, with President Xi Jinping.
After the conversation, PM Mottley remarked on Twitter, " On Tuesday, I spoke with His Excellency Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China, via telephone. I reiterated my congratulations on the centenary of the Chinese Communist Party and registered the deepest appreciation for China’s support since the beginning of the COVID crisis. China has provided PPE and supplies to assist us in our pandemic efforts, and we recently received 30,000 Sinopharm vaccines, which came at a critical time to support and protect Barbadians."
She added, " I also commended President Xi for his ongoing action to ensure that COVID-19 vaccines become a global public good. I also supported the call for a global forum on vaccines and to establish an international clearinghouse that will provide fairness for everyone."
Notably , Barbados is China's good friend and good partner in the eastern Caribbean. Since establishing diplomatic ties between China and Barbados 44 years ago, the two countries have witnessed constant high-level exchanges and fruitful cooperation.
Prime Minister further noted that, "I also stressed that Barbados only supports a science-based approach with respect to determining the origins of COVID-19. We discussed the Belt and Road Initiative. Barbados has already benefited from China’s cooperation in out infrastructural development needs and results of this can be seen across the landscape of Barbados."
"We spoke about ways to assist Barbados’ economy to grow in order to recover from the economic crisis that has come with COVID. We are also reviewing the case for 5G. The call was a demonstration of the commitment to strengthening relations with China." She added.
China president Xi Jinping stressed that both China and Barbados adhere to putting the people first. China is ready to encourage exchanges of experience in national governance among Barbados, expand practical cooperation in infrastructure & other areas and push China-Barbados associations to a new level.
