Bahamas signs LOA with SpaceX, aims to enhance space-related tourism

On the 20th of February 2024, MOTIA officially signed an LOA which boasts the Bahamas introduction to Space-related tourism.
The agreement establishes a strategic partnership between the two parties where SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rockets will land on autonomous drone ships within Bahamian waters. This of course adds to SpaceX’s cause of reusing rockets and presents potential for Bahama being considered for future space launch and recovery initiatives.
The agreement also has the Bahamas supporting SpaceX’s Star Link mission which aims to provide global internet coverage. The Bahamas will now aim to promote space-related tourism initiatives, namely, sites will be set up to allow for safe viewing of SpaceX rocket launches and landings which is a tourism feat not every nation can provide.SpaceX will also be providing the region with resources, technology and information, which is likely to improve first responders’ capabilities in emergency situations.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Investments & Aviation, Chester Cooper, stated in a press release that the LOA with SpaceX signifies a new era for The Bahamas. Then went on to express that He is honoured to work with SpaceX for their Falcon 9 rockets to safely land on an autonomous drone ship within Bahamian waters, helping to forward their rocket reusability efforts.He further added that simultaneously, through Starlink's high-speed internet from space, the agreement opens doors to unexpected opportunities for the nation's citizens, cultivating long-term advantages for education, emergency response and innovation.
The Bahamian Government aims to use this partnership for job creation, economic growth, and better opportunities for education.
He states “The Bahamas is poised to embrace its newfound role in the global space industry, marking a pivotal moment in the nation's history. We look forward to a future where The Bahamas stands proudly as a trailblazer in space tourism and technology in line with our Blueprint for change and our Innovate242 initiative"
SpaceX has also committed to creating space installations and exhibits showcasing recognizable hardware and SpaceX spacesuits. This will be the only exhibit from the entity outside of the United States, adding to local awareness and education alongside more reliable internet from Starlink adding potential to further the economy. These progressions took place just as the Falcon 9 completed its 300th successful mission.
