Antigua: All Saints man convicted for police officer impersonation

An All Saints resident has been fined $1,000 after he was found guilty of impersonating a police officer in Antigua.

Trevor Este appeared at All Saints Magistrates’ Court more than two years after the offence took place.

The court heard that in January 2015, Este went to a man’s home in the village of John Hughes and pretended to be a police officer from the Sexual Offences Unit.

He said he was conducting investigations into a rape case and demanded money from the victim to “dispose of the case before it reaches the court”, Antigua and Barbuda police said.

The John Hughes resident, who has never been implicated in any offence, reported the incident to the police and Este was arrested and charged.

Although he was bailed soon afterwards, in February 2017 Este breached his bail conditions and was remanded in custody prior to his trial.

If he fails to pay the fine he will be sent to prison for two months.

“Este is well-known to the police, having being in police custody on numerous occasions and questioned in connection with committing a number of serious offences,” the Royal Police Force of Antigua and barbuda said in a statement.
