Guyana: The police officials in Regional Division 4B have launched an investigation into a fatal accident that took place on Saturday night and resulted in the death of an 81-year-old.
According to the officials' information, the accident involved a motor car with registration number PWW 3407. It was owned by Dilip Gants and was being driven by Sanjay Narine, an 18-year-old of 51 Seaforth Street, Campbellville, Georgetown.
The other vehicle involved was an electric cycle with registration number EM 5336. It was owned and driven by Donovan Douglas of Housing Scheme, North Ruimveldt, Georgetown. The accident took place on the Eccles Public Road, East Bank Demerara, and resulted in the death of Douglas.
According to the preliminary inquiries, the Electric Cycle was traveling along the south on the western drive lane of the eastern carriageway when the driver stopped at a break in the middle and proceeded to turn the west and then north onto the western carriageway. The other vehicle was traveling north at a fast pace and collided with the electric cycle.
Because of the tragic collision, the driver of the electric cycle fell onto the road surface, sustaining multiple injuries. The passerbys reported the incident to the authorities, following which the Emergency Medical Technicians arrived at the scene and, upon arrival, examined and pronounced the 81-year-old dead.
The authorities took the body of the deceased to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home and is awaiting a postmortem examination. Meanwhile, the motor car PWW 3407 is also in custody for inspection while the driver remains in custody.
Meanwhile, the citizens and residents of Guyana expressed their anger over the family of the deceased for allowing him to go out in a vehicle at such an age.
"First and foremost, why did his relatives allow him to be the owner of an electric bike at his age?" Wrote a user named Gibson, while another user named Baksh said, "81 years? Should not have been on a bike in traffic."
