Barbados: The British Airways is providing its travellers a chance to sip the Mount Gay Rum for the first time ever. The rum will only be provided to the visitors during their journey to Barbados.
Mount Gay will be served on board all flights of British Airways from UK to Barbados in celebration of the airline’s 70th anniversary of direct flights to the island nation.
According to the information, Mount Gay, XO will be served to passengers in First and Club World, and Mount Gay Eclipse will be served in World Traveller Plus and World Traveller.
This historic gesture showcases the airline’s commitment towards the nation as they celebrate 7 decades of flying to Barbados.
It is to be noted that the first one stop flight to Barbados departed on April 1, 1954 from London Heathrow and 70 years later the airline now has direct daily services through London Heathrow and Gatwick.
Serving the rum is very symbolic on this auspicious moment as it is deeply rooted in Barbados’ history and cultural identity as the island literally invested this drink.
According to historians, the Mount Gay Distillery also known as Mount Gilboa previously might have been producing rum as early as the 17th century but the first official deed is dated on February 20, 2703 which is why Barbados is called the Birthplace of the oldest rum in the world.
The first and only female master blender, Trudiann Brancker, continues to make the finest blends of this liquid gold. This is why it is anticipated that when travelers get a taste of this unique drink onboard British Airways, they will look forward to booking a rum tour, securing a bottle as a memory, or will want to learn how to make a few rum cocktails during their vacation in the country.
The celebration also continued offboard as Barbados hosted an exclusive reception at the official residence of Prime Minister Mia Mottley on Wednesday. The reception saw distinguished guests such as Minister of Tourism Ian Gooding-Edghill and Chief Commercial Officer for British Airways Colm Lacy.
