Dominica Labour Party cancelled all public meetings on the 2nd of December across the country as of prudent and cautious cause of action in light of yesterday’s political development.

Prime Minister of Dominica, Dr Roosevelt Skerrit took it over to the Radio and his Facebook page to address the nation regarding political violence in Dominica.

“We have taken this decision so that supporters of DLP attending public meetings do not fall victims of supporters of the United Workers Party – who are clearly looking to provoke violence and unrest. Labour party is concerned about the wellbeing of the Dominicans, and we will not put a single individual at risk,” said PM Skerrit.

He also added that during the past few months, the leader of the opposition has become the chief lawbreaker. “We recall the 7th of February 2017, when riots took place in the capital city, and there were attempts to burn down the city by UWP supporters. These supporters were encouraged by Lennox Linton, Edison James and others to defy the police and engage in civil disobedience.”

Not only this, after the incident, Lennox Linton and Edison James were charged with a criminal offence, and they appeared before the court. The case was adjourned to the 2nd of December, 2019 and they were asked to appear yesterday, yet they both have been absent from the court. Thereby, according to proper procedure, the court issued an arrest warrant against both of them.

After this all incident, UWP supporters took the violent way to stop this as in Marigot constituency they started to throw household items and wood on the road and set ablaze. It was clearly seen that Lennox Linton influenced those people as they were holding flags of UWP and shouting the same.

“I am calling Lennox Linton and Edison James to tell their supporters to stop tarnishing the image of Dominica at the international stage. I am calling Linton of UWP to put Dominica first,” said PM Skerrit.

Several facts illustrate that UWP had planned to disrupt elections from the 6th of December as they initiated violent political propaganda and their supporters demonstrated as Dominica is under riots. It is evident that UWP’s manifesto is all full of errors due to haste, as they drastically failed to extend the date of elections, which means the document was created in few hours to give a coverup.

“In the history of 41 years of independence, Dominica’s elections have always been free and fair. This time it will be no different. I urge every Dominican to pursue the path of peace,” PM added.
