Prime Minister of Dominica, Dr Roosevelt Skerrit, held a meeting with the newly elected independent candidate from the Marigot Constituency, Anthony Charles. The meeting was held at the Office of the Prime Minister on Friday morning.

The Prime Minister assured full support to Charles in developing the Marigot constituency. Anthony Charles was elected as the new parliament representative from the Marigot constituency after the December 06 elections.

"We held cordial discussions about his development plans for Marigot, and I assured Mr Charles of the Government's support. I intend to engage further with the independent candidates who contested the December 6 general elections as we chart the way forward for Dominica," said Prime Minister Skerrit.

Meanwhile, Charles said, "PM Skerrit has stated that he and his Government are keen to work with the opposition. It is a very good step. Once he is willing to engage us, and based on the ideas as well as plans which the Government already has in place, once he works with us, we will work with him to get the Marigot Constituency moving forward."

The Marigot constituency had been a stronghold of the United Workers Party since the 1990 general elections, but following the December 06 snap elections, the people voted for a new representation.

Charles is a new representative for Marigot and a new face for Dominica politics. He is a farmer by profession who beat Dominica Labour Party's, Gregory Riviere.

The Dominica Labour Party retained its power after its victory in the snap general elections 2022, which were held on December 6, 2022.

The DLP won 19 out of 21 seats, and two independent candidates acquired the remaining two seats from Marigot and Salisbury constituencies.

This year a total of 45 candidates contested the elections, which is the highest number of individuals to contest elections in Dominica in over a decade.

PM Skerrit has been ruling the nation since 2004 and has taken it to a whole new level.

Following his victory, PM Skerrit said, "I wish this election gives us new opportunities to have a national reset, political discussions and engagement."

He welcomed the independent candidates from both constituencies and said it would give him a chance to know them, their vision for the constituencies, and their ideas for the nation's development.

People welcomed the decision of Prime Minister Skerrit to meet Anthony Charles. Many took to social to express their happiness on it via social media.

"We have to work together to keep building our beautiful country," wrote a user named Kamisha Charles.

"One thing about my PM is he is a loving man and a man of his word," said Melinda Forde.
